Left Arequipa by plane for a one hour flight to Lima ($70) and got a taxi to the Lucky Lodge, my third stay at the iconic hotel.
Had heard that Huaraz and Caraz and Huascaran N.P. was a beautiful area and Lago 69 was worth seeing. We ended up with a not so lucky room, on the ground floor right by the dining room and quadrangle. Did the Kennedy Park walk and along the ocean front and there was hardly anyone around like at Xmas time. In our room we booked for Huaraz and a rental car for the trip ($27pday).
Then a group of rowdy revellers descended into
the dining room, drinking beer and lots of laughter.Then I heard a South African accent so I listened closer and thought I recognized the voice of Michnus, which was impossible of course, so I went out came around the corner and their he was, The Michnus and Elsebie, was unbelievable needless to say. Just like when I first tried to hook up with them at the start of the Dakar and was unable to and then driving down to Pisco pulled into a stop for a drink and there they were parked resting from the heat. Suzie the Brit was there and an Aussies couple, Paul and Nieke, Phillipe from Switzerland, and an American couple. They have all been travelling down South America for years by bike or 4x4 and a fine bunch of overlanders. We then all went out for curry dinner and drinks, what a great evening.
We caught the local bus to Plaza de Armas in the city center and walked around the plaza and then got the bus back to Luck Lodge. We met the gang again at a water fountain show and and another meal and bid them all farewell.
